Cooking Basics

There are some basic cooking essentials that every kitchen should have. First, a large stockpot for making soups; soups made in a large quantity are great because they can be frozen then easily made into a meal during the week when time is precious. Heavy saucepans or Dutch ovens are great for roasting and braising. I love a cast iron skillet for high temperature searing and stovetop roasting--and this item will last you a lifetime. For pasta lovers, a 14-inch skillet is a must for tossing pasta with sauce, and it's also a perfect pan for quick-cooking meats and skillet braised vegetables Italian-style.
