A special grappa treat

Various fruits have been macerated in grappa for centuries. Cherries go especially well with grappa. Trim the cherry stems, place them in a quart-size glass jar, add 4 tablespoons of sugar, and add grappa to cover. Leave the jar on a sunny windowsill, loosely covered, for one week. Seal tightly and allow to steep for 3 months away from light. Serve the grappa and the fruit together in a brandy snifter as an after dinner digestivo.
