Rosso di Montalcino

Most people have heard of Brunello di Montalcino, the auspicious DOCG red wine grown in the vineyards outside the ancient Etruscan town after which it is named. Slightly lower in profile but also worth a taste is Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello’s younger brother. Rosso di Montalcino is also made entirely of Sangiovese grapes and grown within the same delineated region as Brunello. This DOC was established in 1984 to allow producers to age their Brunello di Montalcino for the required time (at least five years before it can be sold!) while generating a profit from their earlier releasing Rosso, which is only requires a year of aging. This younger wine is generally a third the cost of Brunello, and is typically lighter, fresher, and more approachable. Rosso di Montalcino is a delightful accompaniment to grilled meats.
