Italian Sagre

A sagra is an Italian festival—a local celebration usually honoring whatever is being harvested from the earth at that time of year. Sagre (the plural of sagra) range in size and often feature live music, sporting competitions, and of course, lots and lots of food. For example, during the vendemmia (grape harvest) in September, Italians all over the country celebrate the wine and grapes with sagre of all shapes and sizes. Attending a sagra is an excellent and affordable way to get up close and personal with Italian life and locals, so next time you are traveling through Italy, insert the local sagre into your itinerary.
