Sicilian Breakfast

As early at 5 AM in Sicily, bars begin rolling out their breakfast fare. Just to list a few, there are cornetti alla crema, cioccolata, ricotta, marmellata, nutella, and miele; cornetti integrali, macallè, cannoli, sfoglie, flauti, bocca di leone, ciambelle, pancioccolato and fagottini! Sicilians really enjoy their breakfast, which is usually much larger and richer than that of other parts of Italy, where breakfast is largely similar to Continental breakfast. Granita, a typical Sicilian dessert, is made of frozen sugar, water, and flavoring, and is enjoyed for breakfast in Sicily during the warm summer months. The most popular morning granita is coffee flavored and topped with fresh unsweetened whipped cream, but the famous citruses of Sicily are popular flavors any time of day. The breakfast I enjoy the most when in Sicily is a brioche stuffed with pistacchio ice cream.
